Propellerhead Reason 5: First look

May 29, 2010

Reason 5
Techno producers look out! Reason 5 is about to launch and it has some gnarly additions which make its already impressive list of instruments even better. The original studio in a box has been neglected of late with all the hype of Ableton and other DAWs, but with the recent renaissance of hardware instruments and these new enhancements, Reason may just be set to make a renaissance of its own.

No doubt more features will be released as we get closer to launch but for now check out the teasers below.

MTC’s back at Deep Eleven

May 19, 2010

The Melbourne Techno Collective charges back into town on June 5 for Tastes Like Techno 4. Fierce like a freight train but decidedly more like a shopping trolley with a bung wheel, we’re carving our own path, launching ourselves left when others turn right and our cart is choc full of high calorie, meaty, artery clogging underground guck. Do you see where this is going? MMMmmm I can taste the techno right now.

Like your favourite comfort food without the comfort, Melbourne Techno Collective techno will break your teeth, cut up the roof of your mouth and give you a bad case of heartburn.

On the Menu this time round is;
Steve Ward Live – In his first ever appearance parting his hair on the right hand side.
Dave Pham – Leaner, meaner and ready to kick arse.
Dave ‘the lost boy’ Rankine – Back from outer space to get all up in your face
Good Machine Bad Machine’s Peter Baker and Not Happy Jan – Playing bad machine mean machine with your head. (What does that even mean?)
And Rollin ‘Rollin, Rollin’ Connection, connecting electrodes to your nipples and charging this mutha fucka to full whack.

With mad support from the Melbourne Techno Collective’s resident chefs Matt Radovich, Sam McEwin, Craig McWhinney & Jay Reading with Dj Booshank cooking disco lamb shank for early arrivers.

Entry $15 on the door or $5 for MTC newsletter subscribers

Techno: Some say drinking pineapple juice will sweeten the flavour, we say you’ll be tasting it for weeks!

Almost 10 Questions with Danni B

May 6, 2010

The MTCs Sam McEwin sat down with Tickled Pink honcho and amazingly talented Danni B ahead of her Friends of My Aeon project which kicks of this Saturday at the Brunswick nightspot (That’s My Aeon in case you were wondering). Read on to find out a little more about just what makes her tick.

When and how did you start DJing?

My very first gig was July 2005, wow it’s been 5 years already! It was at the first Tickled Pink party & I was extremely nervous as I had not only the butterflies of playing your first set, but also the stress of running your very first party & hoping some peeps would actually turn up! To my pleasant surprise the launch night was a huge success, we had a packed crowd & we have been going strong ever since. We are celebrating our fifth birthday with a free party at 24 Moons on Queens Birthday eve (June 2nd). Tickled Pink came about with the idea to start a night with a all female resident base (something that wasn’t being done back then). I was hanging out with my girlfriends playing tunes & thought, man we should be doing this in a club somewhere!

Best and worst gig?

Wow best gig…That’s a hard one. All Tickled Pink parties stand out for me obviously as they are so special & I put so much work into them, we have had some amazing parties! But 2 stand outs would be, warming up for Christian Burkhardt NYE 2010, I played the warming up to midnight set too so that was pretty special. Warming up for one of my hero’s blew my mind & the crowd were in major party mode so it was amazing. The other would definitely be Ostara Festival last year. This party has such a great vibe, the crowd are so friendly & really get into it. I would say that’s probably the best set musically I have ever played. Now worst gig.. I have to say I haven’t had too many terrible experiences, I have been lucky. But when a venue doesn’t have a good sound system & a good console, they are usually bad gigs. When I can’t hear properly I have no confidence & don’t feel good about what I am playing.

Current Influences?

I am loving deep minimal & tech house right now & guys that are really influencing me at the moment are Inxec, David Keno, Dyed Soundorom, Burkhardt, Hugo, Andri, Mark Henning & Reboot.. can’t get enough of these guys at the moment! So much awesome local talent too, the ‘We Are International’ party put on by Beef Records & Chameleon Recordings last week was a true indication of the awesome local talent we have here.

Day job or full time DJ?

A bit of both. I am still working full time, but running events & DJing on weekends & in my spare time. Would love to make the move to events & music full time though, hopefully get there soon!

Any aspirations to produce?

Yeah definitely but it’s all still a bit mind boggling. My partner Andy Kidd is a producer so I’m hoping he can start to show me the ropes. I’m a little bit time poor at the moment so need to start putting some time away to learn. I am the yay or nay girl for when he is writing though & we share ideas, I just need to learn how to actually get my ideas down.

Tell us about Friends of My Aeon… What’s the concept?

Yes the exciting new party! The crew from My Aeon approached me & asked me to be the ideas woman for an in-house night they wanted to start. Basically I am working from them & helped them with the concept, promotions, managing DJ’s etc.. for ‘Friends Of My Aeon’ which is launching this Saturday night by the way. The idea I had for this night was to bring Melbourne’s best crews together & all work together on a party. I wanted to involve the best from radio, live, DJ & record labels & dish up a fresh ever changing line up for the punters, keep things interesting. This party is about keeping a friendly atmosphere & basically showcasing some damn fine artists!

Will you still be DJing in ten years time?

Hhhmmmm that’s a tough question, I am sure I will still be in the industry, even if it’s just working in events & running parties.. but saying that I love Djing so much I can’t see myself giving it up anytime soon, maybe in 10 years time I will be playing live!!

What’s your dream gig?

Somewhere in Berlin definitely. I still haven’t had the chance to get over there but plan to do it in the next 2 years. I love the fact you can play the deepest wonkiest minimal at a peak time set in Berlin & everyone is loving it. Unfortunately in Melbourne if you play really deep you can only really do warm up sets as the crowds expect a bigger sound for peak time.

Is there anywhere in Melbourne you’ve always wanted to play but never got the chance?

Well I actually have never managed to get myself on a Future Entertainment or Likes Of You line up, would love to play to a big festival crowd or a play some chunky tech at a Likes.. party. What attracts me to those parties is definitely the up for it crowds & it will just be a fun new experience which is what I am all about.
