Joris Voorn a dedicated mind

admin | February 11, 2010

Screen shot 2010-02-11 at 3.04.39 PM
Following a year in which he put out a celebrated double mix CD, earned accolades for his live sets and released one of Ibiza’s biggest anthems, Resident Advisor’s Todd L. Burns sat down with the Dutch DJ/producer to take stock.

There’s a lot of words to describe Joris Voorn. But let’s go with unpretentious. From his humble beginnings in a small Dutch town, Voorn’s rise to superstar DJ status has been a measured process. A big remix here, a quality single there, a beloved mix CD, a fantastic live gig: His is not so much the stuff of legend as it is the stuff of hard work and dedication. Nonetheless, 2009 seemed to be the year when it all exploded. His Balance 014 mix has already gone down as one of the finest in the series, “Sweep the Floor” swept Ibiza and he garnered enough of your votes to hit the top 10 in both our live act and DJ poll at the end of the year. We caught up with him in January to speak about the accolades, his start as a DJ and why Ibiza has become credible again.

McWhinney makes Beatport bestsellers

admin | February 9, 2010

Craig McWhinney, a music lover from the age of 5 is no stranger to complex rhythms, the concept of harmony and the will of a musician. In the past couple of years Craig has rapidly climbed the Melbourne techno ranks, from being an up and comer one year to earning himself support time slots at major events. His drive to succeed and stand tall in the competitive world of DJing is what has made him quickly become a “favourite local” to many a punter. By the age of 12 Craig had picked up the guitar and in his early teen years Craig’s musical curiosity guided him to learn the flute, clarinet and saxophone, which meant he was a prominent member of the school band. From there he discovered the beauty of the drums. Not unlike many techno DJs, learning to play the drums was just the tip of the iceberg, a platform for which they appreciate with greater understanding the power of the bass and where it can lead to musically. 5 years of bashing at the drums and being involved in a metal band and a Latin jazz outfit, again resulted in Craig exploring different sounds, sounds that weren’t necessarily all drum based but heading in the electronic direction… Portishead, Massive Attack, and Tricky. The more Craig got into electronic music the deeper he delved into the gamut of sound. He bought turntables at the end of December 2001, and since then he has been playing gigs for about 2 years. His DJing debut being in August of 2002 at Melbourne techno institution Fokus. Craig’s “style” is hard to describe, his eclectic tastes and influences make him one of those DJs that can adapt to his surroundings with graceful ease. His groove is aggressive but smooth, from the hardest of the hard techno, Detroit techno, house right through to dark electro and minimalesque beats. Drawing DJing influences from his (now) peers Mike Callander, Ben Cromack, Disko Pussy, Dave Pham, Dallas Raft and Dave Rankine. “Watching these guys every week taught me how to play.” These DJs along with the records that find themselves flying out the door and into his record box are forever changing Craig’s musical direction/mood and aesthetic. Continuously evolving and open to learning new things. This open minded attitude and covet for wanting to move forward and play music to the people is why Craig has played on the same bill as the likes of Speedy J, Miss Kittin & the Hacker, Thomas Schumacher, Tiga, CJ Bolland, Misstress Barbara, Samuel L Session, Green Velvet, Renato Cohen, Joel Mull and Adam Beyer. 2004 has also seen Craig play his first interstate gig in Adelaide at Winter Enchanter Festival.

The Melbourne Techno Collective’s Craig McWhinney has rocketed into the Beatport bestsellers charts with his remix of local icon Christian Vance’s Chase the Night. The track which was featured on Carl Cox’s new Global Underground mix is – at the time of writing – number 42 on
Beatport’s Techno Top 100 Downloads. Chase the Night was originally released on Haul Music in 2009 and has received strong international support, with McWhinney’s mix adding extra punch to what was already an epic track.

McWhinney has a string of releases and remixes planned for early 2010; and with support from the likes of Carl Cox and many other big name jocks, 2010 could be a very big year of our Craig.

Martin Buttrich debut album on Desolat

admin | February 8, 2010

martin+buttrich
Martin Buttrich the silent partner and genius behind the likes of Loco Dice and Timo Maas, will release his debut album Crash Test at the end of next month. The Hanover based studio wizard who is usually content to leave the limelight to others, came out in his own right in 2004 with his Meeting Dave Dish / Mr. Medicine Man 12″ release on Four:Twenty Recordings. This was followed by releases on Pokerflat, Planet E and Cocoon in 2006 and 07, however Buttrich has been anything but prolific under his own name.

The 11 track Crash Test album will be released on Loco Dice’s Desolat label at the end of March and will represent 15 months of production for Buttrich.

Mike Callander: Music sounds better hot pink

admin | February 4, 2010

haulYes music sounds better when it’s hot pink, or at least that is the case when Mike Callander has anything to do with it. Callander’s latest outing on his own Haul Music imprint hit the digital “shelves” today, with the hypnotic tech house bomb arguably Callander’s strongest release to date. Complete with a monster techno reworking from the MTC’s own Craig McWhinney, the latest Haul release only adds to the mounting evidence that Melbourne is set to explode onto the world scene.

Joris Voorn best break through DJ? IDMA

admin | February 3, 2010

joris_voorn_ibizaWith this years’ Winter Music Conference (WMC) in Miami just over a month away, preparations are being made for the associated International Dance Music Awards (or IDMA). Nominations have been announced and voting is currently underway on the WMC website with some notable inclusions for techno fans. The frenetic Dubfire has received a nomination for best American DJ and Joris Voorn and Gui Boratto have both been nominated for best breakthrough DJ. Also of note are the nominations for best minimal/techno track which includes Luciano and Guy Gerber’s Arcenciel, Marco Carola’s Bloody Cash, Gui Boratto’s No Turning Back, Cirez D’s On Off, Dubfire’s Rabid and Claude Von Stroke’s Vocal Chords – which could possibly have received a nomination for most annoying track in history if such a category did exist.

You can vote in the IDMA by completing the form at www.wintermusicconference.com/idmaballot/finalballot/index.php

There’s something queer about Carl Cox?

admin | February 3, 2010

Carl_Cox_488756a

In this interview with Carl Cox ahead of the upcoming Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in March, Carl Cox discusses among other things, his Frankston retreat. We also learn at least two other important facts. 1. A sufficient number of  people have teased the UK DJ for him to be slightly embarrassed to admit he has a house in Frankston. A job well done. 2. Sydney people have no clue about music. “Hard House DJ” please.
